Introduction to personality
Another approach to career is to consider the importance of personality. Personality is the complex sum of the ways we prefer to do things. Some aspects of differences in human personality are well understood, such as the types of information we pay attention to, the level of activity we prefer, and how structured and organised we like our lives to be.
Because personality does not necessarily imply competence, it has sometimes been overlooked in careers work. Abilities, interests and values are those things most commonly explored when encouraging young people to think about career choices, yet some would argue the relationship between personality and career is as important as any of those. For those
considering career change, personality is often a useful way to look at oneself from a new perspective.
Personality is a complex subject and can only be explored here to a basic depth. We will only take one approach to personality, albeit a well established one. However in learning about our personality, it’s always possible to refine what we know and to discover more – those are particular strengths of the approach we will take.
