Motivation - reflecting on the exercise
Some people find this exercise difficult to do whereas others are clear about their own dreams and their ideal situation. Whichever way it is for you, it’s important to pay some attention to how you feel about your work and what other choices you could make.
There is a rational, logical basis to the whole idea of career planning, but this means that the emotional has sometimes been ignored in careers work. Yet people’s emotions are important to them.
Many more decisions than are admitted, including important ones, are made on an emotional basis, and there is interesting scientific evidence that sometimes what appear to be the most logical and rational decisions are actually logical and rational justifications for decisions that had already been taken emotionally.
So it’s important to take notice of the things that you feel strongly about and most motivate you. Wanting something doesn’t mean you have to have it or do it. But denying that it has a strong attraction for - that it motivates you – in the first place prevents you from dealing with it at all.
