The Approach we will take

Changing your career isn't about stumbling on the right opportunity - finding your 'dream vacancy'. It involves a process of thinking about you, your place in the market, finding out about opportunities and learning to be effective in getting what you want.

Changes in your career might require other changes. To go in the direction you want, you may need to do some things differently - to learn new skills, to behave differently, think differently, acquire new information.

In developing this programme, we've also assumed that people seeking career change may need a different kind of approach to their career choice and career management. That's why it uses some new thinking on how people make sense of and manage their working lives. It blends new approaches - in particular, a narrative approach - with tools that have been effective for years within careers work.

In doing the work of this programme, you will be led through a step-by-step process.

You will:

  • explore the story of your career up to this point.
  • examine what you want to be different in your future career.
  • add new information to your career story - information about today's world, information about you, and information about opportunities and possibilities.
  • learn skills and knowledge to bring about the changes you want and to find solutions to obstacles that might stand in your way.
  • consider your career story in the light of new information and explore how it can progress and develop.
