Concluding remarks

Whichever exercise you have done, it can be used as a guide for action. The next chapter exercise is a guide to the immediate action you need to take. You may want to formalise it into an action plan - some people find it easier to work this way. The day in the future exercise can be used in a different way. There's evidence that having a clear goal that it as real as possible is one of the keys to helping people towards personal change; it seems that having a clear vision is more important than knowing exactly how to get there. You may also need to start thinking about dealing with the issues related to the exercise you haven't done.

If you have considered mainly what happens next, you might look forward towards a time in the near future when you can complete the other part of the exercise and write a goal for the future. On the other hand, if you have created a clear goal, you need to think about the steps to take in order to reach that. Some people find it helpful to work out a series of steps backwards from their goal, others prefer to work out what to do first.

It’s also possible you are not yet at a stage to complete either of these exercises properly. You may still be reflecting on the implications of some of the work, or be carrying out research and making contacts. In that case, leave them until you are ready.
