Personal brand - exercises
Exercise 1
Think of a brand you know and like. It could be a brand of anything – cars, clothes, electronics, food…
Write down five words you associate with your brand.
If somebody asked you to explain what the brand conveyed, without showing any of their products, what words would you use?
I don’t think you would have found this exercise too difficult. For example, you may have thought of Apple computers and five words: stylish, productive, creative, clever, innovative.
Exercise 2
A young graduate once wrote a cheeky, but clever, letter to a brewery in an attempt to get a marketing position. In the letter, she compared her characteristics to some of the key elements they used in their own branding – she told them she too could sparkle, be fresh, bubbly, yet always of a reassuringly high quality.
It was a good, if unusual and creative, example of active jobseeking – and it worked too, landing her an interview. But it is also a good example of personal branding.
It’s unlikely you want exactly the same type of opportunity that she did. But if you were to try to describe yourself in the same way, what words would you use?
If a drink were you…
…what characteristics would it have?
Try to think of five words or characteristics.
