Time
Dealing with time is problematic in many people’s lives and work. Often work-life balance issues are a driver for career change; one of the things people often seek in a different career direction is more control over their time.
But making changes takes time – a lot more time than people generally think. There’s often retraining or studying involved, and doing the things discussed in the last few chapters – researching information, thinking about yourself, networking, seeking opportunities – all take time. If you decide to set up a business, getting up and running takes a large amount of work, and it’s often necessary to work very hard in the early days to become established.
People use many ways to try to deal with their time pressures. Often they have learned to use a range of time management techniques and resources.
This next exercise doesn’t deal with common techniques - such as diaries, to-do lists, prioritising - but takes a bigger picture approach that is sometimes enlightening to those contemplating career change.
